Millions of Americans are casting their votes in what could be the most consequential US presidential election in history.
Either Donald Trump or Kamala Harris will be crowned the next president. The campaign has been long and divisive - and there are fears widespread violence and January 6-style riots depending on the result.

1 of 21 Donald Trump's mugshot
The photo was released August last year but it immediately became a campaign symbol. Donald Trump's mugshot appeared on T-shirts with the caption "NEVER SURRENDER" within hours of being published. The snap was taken in Atlanta's Fulton County jail after Mr Trump was arrested on charges of plotting to overturn Georgia's 2020 election results.

A painful TV debate between current US President Joe Biden and Donald Trump in June sparked questions about Mr Biden's ability to run for a second term. Mr Biden appeared to freeze and lose his train of thought as he struggled to get to the end of his sentence. It was ultimately the turning point that led to Kamala Harris becoming the Democratic candidate.

Former US president Barack Obama endorsed Kamala Harris shortly after Joe Biden announced he would not contest the election. He's appeared at a number of rallies to support the vice-president, including in the swing state of Georgia at the end of October.

Elon Musk, the X owner and the world's wealthiest man, jumped around the stage in joy at a Donald Trump rally in Bulter, Pennsylvania in early October. The tech billionaire gifted $1million daily to a voter in the key swing states, who signed a petition in favour of free speech and the right to bear arms.

Global star Beyoncé appeared at a Kamala Harris rally in the last weekend of the presidential campaign, telling voters America was on the "brink of history". The rally in Texas, which focused on abortion rights, saw the pop star urge voters to “sing a new song” because “old notes of discord, despair, no longer resonate”.

6 of 21 Donald Trump survives an assassination attempt
Donald Trump survived an assassination attempt during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, in July. The former US president was bundled to the ground by secret service agents following several shots. One attendee was killed and two were critically injured.

Trump supporters wore bandages over their ear in solidarity with Mr Trump after the assassination attempt on him. Republicans placed plasters over their right ears, while others taped paper in place as they attended the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. An advertisement for Kamala Harris was displayed on the 580,000-square-foot Exosphere at Sphere at the end of October in Las Vegas, Nevada. It was the first political campaign to project an ad on the sphere.
