For first-time dog owners, choosing the right breed can be a daunting task.
However, a team of vets shared some advice, suggesting certain breeds that are more suitable for those new to pet ownership. In a TikTok video shared by Santa Monica Veterinary Group, they advised: "If you're looking to adopt or get a new furry addition to your family, here are some dog breeds our team at the clinic recommends."
The clip shows a vet asking their colleagues which breeds they'd suggest for first-time owners. One vet recommended mixed breed dogs, saying: "I usually say mixed breed dogs because hopefully, you get the best of two, or four, or six, or eight different worlds." Another suggested a Toy Poodle, while a third recommended a Pit Bull, stating: "People judge them but they're very loving and good family dogs.
Another vet suggested: "I'd say a Shih Tzu because my mum had a Shih Tzu and it kept her company and slept with her every night. They got through their health issues together." Lastly, one vet recommended a chihuahua, noting that they "live forever".
Reacting to the video, one user commented: "Definitely not Dachshund." Another added: "I adopted a Pitty mix and he's stuck to me like glue. Literally cheek to cheek right now as he sleeps." A third user suggested: "Japanese Chin."
In other dog news, a vet warned there's certain dog breeds they'd never want to own. Vet tech Connie controversially stated she'd steer clear of owning a Goldendoodle, a Golden Retriever and Poodle mix. She elaborated: "Or any doodle/poo mix. They should not exist. Some are really nice but most are bat**** crazy, neurotic psychopaths."
