Many of us love detouring to the clothing section while doing our food shop in supermarkets. There's an amazing selection nowadays – as many stores are keeping up with fashion trends at reasonable prices.

However, not all garments are affordable for everyone. And that was definitely apparent when people popped into Tesco recently.

Shoppers were left gobsmacked after finding a simple grey F&F tracksuit set for a whopping £174 – with some even urging the supermarket to "stay in its lane".

Shopper Charlotte Clarkson went viral recently after she shared a video of her finding the outfit in her local Tesco. She said: "Have I died and come back to life? Because since when has a matching set at Tesco cost £175."

She showed that the hooded tracksuit top is priced at £95, while the matching trousers are priced at £75. So while the grey set is the perfect cosy winter set, it will set you back an eye-watering price of £174.

But in small print on the tag, F&F state that the product is made from 100% cashmere - a fabric that is typically expensive because of its rarity. It is harvested from the undercoat of goats and the production process can be expensive.

However, many like Charlotte, believe that if the product costs that much, it is not the right product to be sold in the supermarket.

Charlotte argued: "It just doesn’t fit with the brand of what they currently sell if that makes sense. Even if material is good quality I didn't expect it in a Tesco store."

And some agreed with her, with one commenter writing: "People that can afford 100% cashmere clothes, won't be buying it in Tesco."

Meanwhile, another commented: "Tesco is a supermarket, just because it's cashmere doesn’t mean we shouldn't be shocked that they are trying to sell clothes at £175! It’s a high street shop." A third added: "Tesco selling cashmere is just wrong."

A fourth commented: "I thought Tesco was affordable." Another said: "Tesco regular priced sets are lovely enough, I don't need cashmere for that price!" Meanwhile, one shopper even suggested Tesco should "stay in its lane".

Despite the backlash, others defended the price. One clapped back: "It's cashmere so that's not a bad price." Another said: "It's cashmere. It's quite cheap for 100% cashmere."

And a third noted: "Maybe because it's 100% cashmere and the price of cashmere is currently between £85 and £130 per kilo."

A spokesperson for Tesco told the Mirror: "F&F is offering our latest premium collection, made from 100% cashmere. Launched in selected stores this week, we know how popular and loved these pieces are by customers.

"The collection has been competitively priced, starting at £69.50 - £95. As with all our collections, we ensure that every item is created with quality, for all our customers.

"We have our wider collection of knits which start from £14, to more premium quality such as mohair, wool, and cashmere - giving our customers investment pieces which last throughout the seasons."
